Can you go Paleo and train for triathlon/marathon?
Nutrition, October 06, 2014
Grains and legumes are stables for athletes but these are restricted in a Paleo diet so how do you get around it?
The Paleo diet has a lot of good things going for it - it excludes processed foods, refined sugars, and promotes fruit, vegetables, and grain fed meat. Ultra runner Timothy Olsen smashed the course record at the 2012 Western states 100 miler a few months after turning to Paleo. What wasn't widely reported was that some modifications were made by Olsen. He needed more mid run carbs - he experimented with honey dates and dried fruit and then tried energy gels. Paleo is a tough food lifestyle to maintain when you are endurance training. Joe Friel a top triathlon coach and author of "The Paleo diet for Athletes" (he runs one of my favourite blogs) brecommends athletes to try non-Paleo carbs like sports drinks, bread, rice and starchy potatoes but avoid at other times. At the end of the day if trying to change your diet gives you the push you need to cut back on refined sugars, excessive alcohol and preservative/additive laden processed food then it's not a bad start.
