Understanding Trauma: The Roots, Branches, and Path to Healing
Health, May 15, 2025
Jeff English discusses how unresolved wounds shape our behaviours, the importance of addressing root causes, and pathways to true healing and growth.
Trauma is a complex and often misunderstood part of the human experience. As Jeff English eloquently explains in The Drive podcast with Dr. Peter Attia (10th March 2025, Ep 339), trauma is not merely about the event itself but about our perception and the subsequent response—a moment of perceived helplessness that activates the limbic system, our brain’s emotional center. Whether it’s a singular, overwhelming incident (Big T trauma) or a series of smaller, cumulative events (little t trauma), the impact can ripple through a person’s life in profound ways.
Trauma as a Trigger for Disconnection
Jeff emphasises that trauma often results in a disconnection from our true selves. Instead of forming genuine, healthy connections, individuals may develop maladaptive strategies—behaviors and coping mechanisms that serve as substitutes for authentic connection. These can include substance abuse, gambling, pornography, or other compulsive behaviors perceived as harmful. Conversely, some coping strategies are seen as socially or personally acceptable, such as workaholism, perfectionism, or endurance sports. While these may seem productive on the surface, they can also be masking deeper unresolved trauma.
The Power of Recognising Emotional Overreactions
A powerful insight from Jeff’s discussion is the phrase: "If it's hysterical, it's historical." This reminds us that intense emotional reactions often stem from unresolved past wounds rather than the current situation. When we find ourselves overreacting, it’s vital to pause and ask, What is this really about? Beneath the surface, there may be vulnerabilities or old wounds being triggered. Growth involves leaning into these emotional responses, understanding their roots, and addressing the underlying issues rather than merely reacting to the surface.
Guilt vs. Shame: The Inner Battle
Another crucial distinction Jeff makes is between guilt and shame. Guilt pertains to the recognition of having made a mistake—an external error that can often motivate growth and correction. Shame, on the other hand, is internal—believing you are the mistake. This distinction is vital because unhealthy shame can trap individuals in a cycle of self-criticism and disconnection. Healthy shame, however, can serve as a guide for moral growth and self-awareness.
The Tree of Trauma: Roots and Branches
These roots are the unseen foundation of later behaviors and emotional patterns. The branches, which are visible and outwardly expressed, represent the adaptations we develop in response—coping mechanisms and maladaptive strategies:
Co-dependency: seeking outer validation to feel secure
Addictive patterns: substances, compulsive behaviors, obsessive tendencies
Attachment issues: anxious, avoidant, or disorganized attachment styles
Other maladaptive strategies: perfectionism, workaholism, control issues
The Choice: Deal with Trauma or It Will Deal With You
Jeff underscores a critical truth: trauma cannot be buried forever. It will surface—sometimes unexpectedly—when triggered. You cannot play “whack-a-mole” with these issues indefinitely. The key is to shift the driver’s seat of your life from the reactive, maladaptive “inner child” to a more conscious, adaptive self. Coping strategies are useful, but without addressing the root causes, they are only temporary bandages.
Moving Toward Healing
Healing requires courage and a willingness to explore the deeper parts of ourselves. It involves recognising the roots of our trauma, understanding how they shape our behaviors, and working to replant healthier, more resilient emotional roots. This process not only benefits our own well-being but also prevents the cycle of maladaptive behaviors from passing on to future generations.
Final Thoughts
Remember: Healing is a journey, not a destination. It begins with awareness, continues with compassion, and blossoms into freedom from the past’s grip.
